Apple Wallet Bill-Splitting via Receipt Scan

Apple Wallet will soon let iPhone users photograph a receipt and divide its items among friends and family. Users can assign each item to a specific person, and the tool automatically calculates individual totals, including tax and tip for restaurant checks. This eliminates the need for manual calculations or third-party bill-splitting apps. Payment requests are then sent via Apple Cash, Apple’s peer-to-peer (P2P) payment service. Apple Cash, already used for P2P payments through Messages, will become more directly accessible through the new Wallet workflow. The feature is expected to arrive as soon as next week with the release of iOS 27.

      P2P Market Context

Splitting expenses for rent, events, or dining is a common use case for P2P services, and the new functionality strengthens Apple’s position in this competitive market. Zelle remains the dominant player, supported by deep integrations with financial institutions that enable users to send money directly through their banking apps without requiring a separate application. Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App have expanded well beyond basic P2P transfers and continue to refine their user experience—Cash App, for example, recently introduced shareable payment links that simplify collection and splitting. Zelle’s bank integration gives it a built-in user base, while Venmo’s social feed and Cash App’s ecosystem of financial tools keep them popular. Despite these entrenched competitors, Apple may benefit from the widespread adoption of the iPhone and the convenience of integrating payments directly into Wallet. The built-in nature of the feature could encourage more iPhone users to adopt Apple Cash for everyday P2P transactions.
